Must-Have Fireworks Extensions

Posted on: 03.07.2005

I use Macromedia Fireworks nearly every single day of the week. Over the past few years I’ve found that there are a handful of Extensions that I use in the creation of nearly every single button or web layout. The following is the list:

Modify Panel

This is basically the “Modify” menu converted to a perfectly layed out dockable panel with a superb GUI. If you do a lot of rotating, mirroring, flipping, joining, grouping, merging, punching, etc. then this extension is for you.

Fill Handles Assistant

Use this extension to precisely control the fill handles on vector objects. This is great if you are super anal, like me, and you want your gradients to be mathematically perfect.

Super Nudge

If you work in vectors a lot and you find yourself recreating logos or making complex objects, this extension will make your life a whole lot easier. Sometimes you need to be able to nudge an object or subselected anchor point a ½ or ¼ of a pixel.

The following extensions were created for FW 3 and 4 but they still work perfectly fine in MX or MX 2004. They are all very simple GUI-less commands but are extremely powerful. I recommend taking a look at all of the commands in the FW 3-4 pack. There are some really useful commands in there that can save you a ton of time.

Anchor Tools

Use this command to have precise control over anchor points in a vector object. I use the “Reset Handles” command all of the time.

Edit Rectangle Corners

I’m not a huge fan of the “roundness” field on the Properties Inspector when you create a rectangle. Most of the time the rectangle needs to be resized to specific dimentions and that can distort the corners. That’s where this command comes in. Plus, it allows you to use pixels measurements rather than percentage.

Round Bitmap Corners

This works a lot like the Edit Rectangle Corners command but it applies it to a bitmap object. The cool thing about this command is that it uses a vector mask to round the bitmap corners so that your original image is never modified.

Again this works similarly to the Edit Rectangle Corners command but it curves all of the corners on any complex shaped vector object. See the example image to understand what I’m talking about.

Motion Guide

Download MXP

This is just a beautiful command. To use it just create two vector objects. Select both objects and apply the command. Motion Guide will take the object that is arranged top-most in the layer panel, duplicate it a number of times (specified by you), and use the bottom arranged object as a path. Kind of like the way Text attached to a path works. See the example image below:

Where is the Archive?

My journal is now located at my dedicated blog site. You can still reach the old entries via search and direct permalink link, but I will soon phase out all of these entries. Prepare for link rot.
